Mercenario Tinto is the red wine expression of Iago Garrido’s Mercenario négoce project from Galicia’s historic Ribeiro region, built on indigenous Spanish varieties and minimal intervention. It’s fresh, expressive and thoroughly rooted in cool, Atlantic-influenced terroir. Rather than relying on international varieties or heavy extraction, this blend celebrates local grapes that naturally bring bright acidity, perfume and savoury complexity. Gentle foot-treading and extended maceration draw out nuanced red fruit while aging in amphorae and old barrels keeps the texture lively and authentic. The result is a wine that recalls Loire-style freshness with a touch of Galician earthiness.

Winemaking / Farming techniques: A field blend of native red varieties; primarily Caíño Longo, Brancellao, Espadeiro and Sousón. Gently foot-trod and fermented on skins with indigenous yeasts (≈ 30–45 days), then aged ~10 months with a portion in old barrels and some in clay amphorae. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulphur, following Augalevada’s low-intervention ethos.
Style / Body: Light to medium-bodied, fresh and nuanced, with lively acidity and an energetic red-fruit character balanced by savoury depth.
Notes: Bright redcurrant, wild strawberry and pomegranate aromas, with herbal underbrush, violet florals, gentle earthy spice and a whisper of mineral saline. The palate is fresh and juicy yet structured, with fine tannins and a long, savoury finish that keeps things lively.
