Sur les Nuages is one of the standout single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from Central Otago, built with natural winemaking philosophy and vineyard integrity at heart. It’s refined, slightly wild, and deeply expressive of its hillside home. Grown on steep, schist-rich slopes in Pisa, the vineyard benefits from strong diurnal shifts and minimal intervention. Their use of natural yeasts, long maceration and barrel aging brings out layers of earth, spice and forest-floor complexity rather than overt fruit-bomb richness. Each sip evolves; the wine opens from fresh red fruits into savoury, mineral, almost wild Pinot territory. Many critics note its “ethereal” lift combined with “serious structure,” showing that Central Otago can produce Pinot with both finesse and depth.

Why you'll love me

If you appreciate Pinot Noir that’s more nuanced than bold, showing soil, altitude and vineyard character rather than overt extraction, this wine delivers beautifully. It strikes a lovely balance: red fruits and brightness, but with rustic earthiness, complexity and a long, thoughtful finish. It’s a wine that reveals itself slowly, perfect for those who love Pinot but also enjoy texture, depth and a sense of place.

Location: Pisa sub-region, Central Otago, New Zealand
Winemaking / Farming techniques: Hand-harvested grapes. Natural-yeast fermentation, extended skin maceration (approximately 26–35 days on skins, depending on vintage). Around 10–22% whole-bunch inclusion in some vintages. Aged 19–20 months in French oak barrels (with modest new oak, c. 10-22% new depending on vintage). Bottled unfined and unfiltered, minimal sulphur addition only before bottling.
Style / Body: Medium-bodied Pinot Noir with refined structure, fine tannins and a balance of brightness, earthiness and depth. Elegant rather than heavy; builds complexity with aeration or cellar time.
Notes: Red cherry, red plum, mushroom/underbrush, fine dusty tannins, soft cedar/oak spice, dried herbs, and a lingering mineral-tinged finish with savoury lift.
Descriptors: Red cherry · Strawberry · Dried herbs · Mushroom / forest floor · Earth / bark · Nutmeg · Cedar spice · Dusty tannins · Mineral edge · Elegant, savoury finish
