MDI Friulano is a spirited, slightly off-beat take on Friulano from Victoria’s Murray-Darling region. It channels the character of Friuli whites, but through an Australian lens, resulting in a wine that’s both bright and texturally fun. The winemaker behind MDI has a penchant for alternative European varieties and natural-wine-style handling. With Friulano, they lean into skin contact to bring out aromatic depth and phenolic texture that gives the wine more presence than a standard white. The result is an aromatic, slightly skinsy white with citrus-herbal lift, a bit of chew from phenolics, and refreshing acidity that balances the weight.

If you’re tired of everyday whites and want something with character, MDI Friulano hits the sweet spot between approachability and intrigue. It’s got enough aroma and freshness to enjoy chilled, yet enough texture, spice and minerality to partner beautifully with food, especially seafood, charcuterie or herb-rich dishes. It’s a white that keeps you interested sip after sip, and surprises with its balance of fruit, texture and savory edge.

Location: Murray-Darling / Mildura region, Victoria, Australia
Winemaking / Farming Techniques: Hand-harvested Friulano grapes from sustainable vineyards. Vinified with skin contact (often ~10–11 days on skins), indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, typically unfined and unfiltered.
Style / Body: Light to medium-bodied. Textural and slightly skinsy.
Notes: Fresh orchard and stone fruits; green pear, quince, ripe white peach, layered with aromatic florals. On skin-contact bottlings: more complex skin-driven character: dried orange peel, ginger, tea leaf or herbal spice, nutty-almond-skin notes, with a gentle tannic grip. Palate often shows gently textured phenolics, a saline or mineral edge, and a dry, savory finish.
Descriptors: Pear · Quince · White peach · Floral lift · Dried orange peel · Ginger / spice · Almond-skin / nutty · Saline/mineral edge · Skin-tannin texture · Dry finish
Pairing Suggestions: Great with seafood (oysters, mussels, grilled fish), shellfish, fresh pasta, risotto, dishes with herbs or light spices, goat’s-milk cheeses, charcuterie. Also works with richer vegetarian fare or Asian-influenced light dishes thanks to its texture and savory-mineral character.
